Watching Casablanca, thinking of how strange it is for America to be hating France so virulently. Of course, we've never really liked France much, even before the current Iraq flap. I think the reasons used to be that they are better educated than we are, and historically rude, at least to tourists in Paris, where I'd guess most Americans who ever meet French people do so. We always shake our heads and wonder why they are so rude.
During World War II, when France fell and the Germans occupied Paris, it must have been a mark of courage to be rude to tourists. The ruder you were the more likely it was you would be dragged out and shot just for the hell of it. Imagine the courage of a Hitler's waitress to keep him waiting for hours for the check.
