The glorious plan of weekend skiing - two weeks in Thailand at the beach - weekend skiing regrettably didn't quite come to a boil as this past weekend was a bit of a disaster on the skiing front. But, Steve and I made a remarkable effort, driving all the way down to the French Haute-Alpes, via Grenoble to Alpes d'Huez. We weren't expecting much so spent Saturday tooling around Grenoble, which, by the by, is a really really nice city, what with the funky French shopping (they really do have a more interesting sense of style than anywhere else, I think. Lots of funk and uniqueness going on, not just flash like Italy), the fantastic French food (oh yum, rye crepes! Who knew such a thing was possible?), the thousands of university students, and on and on and on.

We got to the piste that night, had a great dinner with Chris and Emm, and then the next morning had big dreams that perhaps it wasn't so bad as all that. But alack, you could actually see the grass patches, and when we went up to the ticket window, the woman explained that it was so bad that the only lift running was running for free, they couldn't justify charging us. So, we did one run (one very very very bad run) and then called it a day, popping off to shop. Which turned out ok for me, I got new fat skis for less than half price! And they are blue blue blue! Still need bindings, but my randon?e days are about to begin.

We then went off to La Grave, just to check it on out, and it does indeed look pretty nice, if nothing short of intense-oh. Another fabulous lunch with Chris and Emm, this light but hearty salad not drowning in dressing for once in its French life, and then onwards and back here.

We also got an avalanche beacon, which is more than a little terrifying to read about. Just need one more, and off we go. Yikes.
