Why are so many songs about Superman really sad?

I have three poignant examples:

1. "Superman's Song" by the Crash Test Dummies. "...But he stayed in the city, and kept on changing clothes, in dirty old phonebooths till his work was through, And nothing to do but go on home."

2. "Superman" by R.E.M. Add a little 80s irony into the mix, and this is just depressing: "I am, I am, I am Superman and I can do anything! You don't really love that guy you make it with now do you."

3. "Waitin' for a Superman" by the Flaming Lips. "Tell everybody waitin' for Superman, that they should try to hold on best they can. He hasn't dropped them, forgot them, or anything. It's just too heavy for Superman to lift."

As superheroes go, Superman is a bit far down on my list, Batman being oh so much freakier, and Spiderman just such a lovely bit of everyman. But Superman, as my dad has explained to me, is Super-Man, and that's that.
