Don't worry, friends and neighbors, even if the polls are wrong (which we have every reason to believe -- more on that in two shakes) and Kerry has majority, he still hasn't got the chance of a slippery snake eel in a bucket of flour. Mother of god, just look at this horror story out of Ohio, where they (that is, the Republican Secretary of State) are requiring voter registration to be on a particular weight of paper, and telling counties to reject registrations already been received on a different type of paper. Just goes to show you that the real and true fear of the Republicans is that people will actually vote -- meaning that they will lose.
On a happier note, I read a very interesting set of thoughts, related to the misrepresentation in the polls spelling doom and gloom for the glory that is Kerry. The pollsters aren't polling anyone who doesn't use a landline as their primary phone line: that is, not polling anyone using a mobile as their primary telecommunication device. Who uses a mobile as their primary telecommunication device? Young, urban professionals? Hmmm... Not to mention the development of caller ID and spam screeners to avoid answering these questions in the first place.
Anyway, the arrival of an old friend who has been in Geneva for the last three years and just spent a month in the States (in the Hamptons no less!) didn't bring much good cheer for the forthcoming election. She reports some serious skepticism that Kerry is going to pull this off, a much more negative view than she was holding in Geneva.
Fool me once! Shame on you! Fool me twice...and then you have to just wonder about the whole entire American populace. We've got a spare room on this side of the Pacific for those that want to escape.
One more thing. I've been listening to this brilliant record that everyone should hop out and get: whether you like country, folk, general happy/melancholy, lowkey rockabilly, or straightforward rock and roll...Billy Bragg and Wilco, Mermaid Avenue, and you should listen and love it. "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key" avec Natalie Merchant (best back-up singer of all time?), is my current favorite.
