This quote from Ridley Scott just blew my mind:

He categrically doesn't read? Like he has all the world's good ideas in his head already, and he can't risk taking any more in, just in case someone might think he's not the first person to think his brilliant thoughts (which can be like what, one completed idea every three years or so for a film director)? Like the only reason to read is for screenplay ideas, therefore he can derive no benefit from reading?

As someone who categorically reads everything, I can tell him that the more you read, the less likely you will be to hook into one idea someone else thought up and appear to be copying it. Really, what other defence is there against accidentally copying or duplicating but to know that it's already out there.

And if he never reads, then how the @&^$% does he know enough about the &@(Q#*&$ crusades to create a movie about them?

Gaak!

I'm sorry Mr. Scott but ignorance makes a very poor excuse for copyright infringement, especially if pursued "categorically."
