Kevin Kelly wrote an article over at the New York Times that articulates the danger of Google Print better than I can. Basically, if Google is allowed to scan works without certifying that they are in the public domain nor obtaining permission before hand, the responsibility to prevent copy-right infringment moves from the person scanning the work to the person creating it. Should we really expect every author and publisher to keep track and try to stop every person who could possibly infringe on them? That is what the Google ruliing would require; if everyone could copy without checking, there would be like a bazillion sites copying things.
