Lost Losing Its Way?
While I don’t actually *watch* Lost, I did see one episode, and read a couple of synopsis. I’ve heard it’s quite good. Those who are smarter than I, however, have indicated that the show is in decline, which prompts me to note to things:
- The response to Lost always seemd to me to be directly influenced by September 11th. I mean, we have a show which starts with a plan crash in which a ton of people die, and no-one knows what is going on. They are thrust into a new world, where they’re not sure who the enemy is or how they got there but they do know that everything is somehow dangerous. If that doesn’t describe Amerca post 9/11 I don’t know what does.
- Regarding the lack of story arch mentioned, I agree wholeheartedly. I think the inability to be able to cohesively plan for longer then one season was what limited the greatness of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, etc. Sadly, the only US show which I know of which tried to do was was Babylon 5, which, by all accounts, sucked.
If only we could all take a page from the Japanese: Cowboy Bebop was planned out from the beginning, which I think is common over there. The whole damn thing holds together quite well. Why don’t we do that, you know? Sure the Simpsons would only last half as long, but it would burn twice as bright, and wouldn’t lead to that sickening “I know I love these characters but this is becoming soo depressing to see them, God this series is like a long car ride-I need some AIR” feeling you get round about season three of most shows.
